Mylar® and Melinex® Film: Attenuation Fundamentals

HVAC-Attenuation-Mylar-and-Melinex

In the world of acoustics there is a variety of polyester film products out there, but two of the strongest and most reliable names on the market today are Mylar® and Melinex®.

It might seem like most grades, types and sources of polyester film are pretty much the same, so we thought we’d go through some of the basics surrounding these products, and when and why to apply them in attenuation manufacture and design.

Polyester film

Polyester film is transparent, flexible film that can withstand extreme conditions. If you know your films you’ll know that Mylar® and Melinex® are part of the DuPont Teijin Films market offering.

They’re two of the most common names out there - so much so that in general, film made from polyethylene terephthalate often gets referred to simply as ‘Mylar’.

The salient feature of these films is their extreme strength and durability, useful for a range of engineering purposes because they combine desirable chemical, electrical and thermal properties.

The benefits of using Mylar® and Melinex® in attenuation products

Mylar® and Melinex® polyester films are used in attenuation for their tensile properties, good adhesion, excellent moisture and chemical resistance, and their ability to withstand extreme temperatures.

They’re also cost effective, making them ideal for dependable high volume industrial performance. Basically, they’re great all-rounders with versatile performance properties.

We use Mylar® and Melinex® polyester films because the aluminium foil facing has a low permeance to water vapour and other gases, making it ideal for air handling ductwork. We can rely on these products to ensure that no stray fibres will enter the airstream of the HVAC system – the tough and highly resistant vapour barrier helps to prevent fibre erosion to the glasswool insulation lining.

Combined with different facing options, these films give exceptional sound absorption, guaranteeing high performance for our range of attenuation products.

Staying current on high performance materials

At HVAC Attenuation we like to stay on top of the latest advances in high performance materials. This gives our customers the assurance that the products they’re buying are made from the best quality materials, tested for performance at every step of the manufacturing process.

We make every attenuator from scratch and can build to any configuration a project requires.

We’re not only interested in designing and selling products but in building strong, lasting relationships with customers and suppliers based on the quality and distinction of our service.
